The old car is in the news this week, thanks to the discovery that an antique car’s stereo is older than the original.

    The researchers analysed the original car stereo for clues about how old it was.

    They found that it was made between 1891 and 1914, which is roughly when the modern stereo boom began.

    That makes sense, says Dr Richard Dutton, a lecturer in archaeology at the University of Exeter.

    “It’s a very good record of the era.”

    But it doesn’t necessarily mean that the car was used by the same people who built the modern car.

    “We think that it could be an individual car that was used for a specific purpose,” says Dr Dutton.

    “If it was a workhorse, then the sound quality would have been good.

    If it was used to play a video game, it would be very quiet.”

    This is where the old car comes in.

    A few decades ago, audio systems weren’t made as well as they are today, says Dutton; “We’ve got to rely on older recordings of music from the past to tell us about how well a new one performs.”

    But because the speakers are still so old, the sound will be far more noisy than a modern system.

    “They’re not going to play much,” he says.

    “So we’d need a modern audio system to do a good job.”

    The researchers have identified two major types of older audio devices.

    “One is a type of amplifier that has a transformer, which amplifies the sound and adds it to the signal.

    And this is used to drive a speaker system,” says Denton.

    “The other is a loudspeaker with an amplifier and speaker cabinets, which has an amplifier, which drives the speaker system.”

    This may sound like a lot of components to work out how old a sound is, but it’s actually a small number.

    It’s the number of speakers that makes a sound louder, says John Martin, a sound engineer at Oxford University who studies sound.

    “That’s where speakers come in.”

    The old stereo A lot of people will have no problem getting a good sound out of their modern cars, but that doesn’t mean that they’re really as good as they used to be.

    In fact, a lot more audio equipment is now older than it used to have been.

    So we need a new audio system that is able to handle those devices.

    Martin says that while the old audio systems are still useful, they’re “not necessarily the most reliable ones”.

    “They sound terrible, they sound really dull, and they have a lot less detail,” he explains.

    The first generation of modern speakers had “the least detailed, least accurate, most complex and most expensive sound systems that you can get in a modern car,” says Martin.

    And as the speaker technology has advanced, modern audio systems have been able to offer better sound quality and better resolution.

    Martin and his colleagues have developed a new type of system that’s better at delivering detail.

    “What we’ve done is we’ve replaced the tubes that we use in our speakers with the same kind of materials that we used to make them in the past,” he tells New Scientist.

    The system is made up of three types of components: a pair of tubes, a copper coil and an audio transformer.

    “There’s a lot that’s in there that we haven’t been able even to see before,” says Peter Begg, the director of the Audio Engineering Centre at Cambridge University.

    Begg has worked with speakers for the past decade and says that modern systems are far better than their predecessors.

    “You don’t have to worry about the sound that you have,” he said.

    “I think we’re a long way from having the same fidelity as those of the past.”

    But for many modern users, it’s going to be hard to upgrade their sound system.

    Begger says that the old sound system won’t be suitable for many people.

    “A lot of them won’t really want to invest in a new sound system,” he told New Scientist, “because they’re going to have to replace them with something new.”

    How old is the car stereo that the researchers analysed?

    Dr Denton says that it’s likely that the audio system in question is more than 50 years old.

    “This is about the time that the cars were really becoming popular, and this is about when you would have had an engine in it,” he explained.

    “But this is before we had much more modern technology.”
